Choose nylon or polyester thread by what the finished leather item will encounter, then narrow the choice by thread size and machine compatibility. The material name is useful, but it does not tell you the exact product's strength, finish, outdoor suitability, or sewing behavior. Two threads carrying the same fiber label can be intended for very different work.

A thick nylon thread and a much finer polyester thread do not provide a meaningful material comparison. Match the nominal size category, construction, intended application, and published specifications as closely as possible. If a retailer omits those details, ask the supplier rather than assuming a similar-looking spool is equivalent.
Use the manufacturer's data for breaking strength when it matters. Fiber reputation cannot replace a product specification, and thread strength alone does not establish seam strength. Hole placement, material condition, seam allowance, and the construction all influence the finished result. For load-bearing or safety-critical articles, follow an appropriate engineered specification rather than a hobby comparison.

Handle a sewn sample rather than judging the thread loose from the spool. Bend the assembly, open it, and move it as the item will move. A bonded nylon product does not become polyester-like in outdoor behavior simply because it is bonded. Likewise, an ordinary household polyester thread should not be assumed to carry an industrial outdoor specification.

Changing material may require a new setup
Even when the nominal size is similar, a replacement product can behave differently along the thread path. Rethread according to the manual, use an appropriate fresh needle, and make a new sample. Keep the old successful sample beside it. Comparing the results is more informative than assuming the previous tension settings must remain correct.

View sample stitching against the actual leather in the light where the product will be used. A loose strand held against a hide can appear different from several inches of stitching. Contrast colors make alignment and stitch consistency more visible; a close match may reduce that emphasis but does not correct a faulty seam.
Purchase enough confirmed thread for the project after testing it. Keep the product identifier and color code, particularly if the item will be made again. If colorfastness or outdoor appearance is important, seek the product's specific information. Neither a fiber name nor an attractive catalog photo establishes how a color will age.
