A leather cushion cover can contain an easy straight panel seam, a bulky piping junction, and a tight corner within a few inches of one another. Choose an upholstery sewing machine by evaluating that sequence. The ability to sew a flat leather sample is only the beginning; panel alignment and control over changing layers determine whether the cover fits when it is turned and installed.
For a first purchase, bring the actual upholstery leather, backing, piping, and zipper materials to a demonstration. A sample sewn through unrelated vinyl may show how the controls work, but it cannot establish the result on your leather.
Reproduce a cushion corner
Make a small sample with the same seam allowances as your intended project. Include a section where the piping ends or joins if the design uses piping. Sew enough length to check whether the top and bottom panels remain aligned, then turn the sample and examine the corner from the outside.
The seam may look even while flat but reveal puckering or a distorted curve after turning. That is why a finished sample matters. Mark the pieces before sewing so you can distinguish inaccurate cutting from layer movement during stitching.
A machine demonstration should include gradual steering and a stop near the corner. A seller racing across two rectangles tells you little about how the machine will behave when you are trying to preserve a carefully cut shape.
Why feeding deserves attention
Upholstery commonly involves layers with different surfaces and stiffness. The outer leather may resist the foot while the backing moves differently underneath. Compound-feed equipment is worth considering for this problem, but its value should be visible in the sample rather than accepted as a slogan.

Piping requires the right arrangement
A piping foot must suit both the machine and the cord assembly. Too little clearance can interfere with feeding; an unsuitable groove or position can leave the stitch line farther from the cord than intended. Ask the supplier to identify the appropriate part rather than buying a foot on appearance alone.
Test the leather wrapped around the cord, not just the cord diameter. At joins, the local stack may differ from the rest of the perimeter. Plan where those joins fall so several bulky features do not converge unnecessarily at one corner.

The table is part of the sewing system
Large panels need support before and after the needle. If material hangs over an edge, its weight can alter how you guide the seam. Clearing the surrounding area may improve control more than turning a tension dial.
Check the practical space around the table, including room for a helper when handling a large cover. Place the machine so you can support the work without twisting your body to avoid a wall. Lighting should reveal the marked seam line without creating glare on a finished leather surface.
A portable machine may fit a small workspace or occasional repair routine, but moving a machine and managing upholstery panels are separate questions. Compare the portable machine options with the workstation your projects require. A compact machine does not make a large cover compact while it is being sewn.
Avoid solving a material problem with force
If the needle deflects, the seam shortens abruptly, or the machine stalls at an intersection, stop and investigate. Pulling the cover through can bend the needle and distort the seam. A bigger motor is not a substitute for a suitable machine class and properly prepared construction.
Check needle condition and system, threading, thread suitability, and whether the foot can follow the transition. Compare a normal seam with the problematic intersection to isolate what changes. Do not use foot-lift clearance as an upholstery thickness rating. A stack fitting under the raised foot does not prove the machine can feed and stitch it reliably through the full cycle.
Choose thread for the environment and the machine
Indoor furniture, a vehicle interior, and an exposed outdoor cushion do not have identical service conditions. Discuss the intended use with the thread and material suppliers. The color and size should also suit the visible topstitching and the machine's operating range.
Where leather is joined to woven backing or other fabric, needle point choice deserves its own test. A point selected for cutting leather can affect other layers differently. Keep a labeled seam sample for each combination of leather, backing, thread, and foot. That reference is especially helpful when replacing a damaged panel months later or ordering another material batch.
A practical purchase decision
Judge the machine by the turned corner, the alignment of a long seam, and the finish on both faces. Confirm the package includes the table and motor you tried, and establish who performs assembly and adjustment. Ask where replacement consumables and service will come from.
For regular upholstery work, a controlled, repeatable setup usually matters more than a headline maximum speed. The useful machine is the one that lets you make the whole cover accurately, including the awkward last section, without relying on pushing the material or disguising defects during installation.
