The right leather needle size is the smallest suitable size that forms a dependable stitch with your chosen thread and material, within the machine manufacturer's limits. That is a testing goal, not a universal number. A fine garment seam, a folded bag handle, and a firm belt edge do not present the same job even when all three are made from leather.
A useful sizing decision begins after you know the correct needle system and point. If those are wrong, comparing sizes will not fix the underlying mismatch. Keep your machine manual and thread supplier's needle recommendations available while you choose a starting combination.
Separate size from system
Packets often carry more than one number. A marking such as 100/16 describes a size using two numbering conventions. It does not describe two different needles in the packet. A system designation elsewhere on the label identifies the needle family required by the machine. Never substitute a needle on the strength of a matching size alone.

Begin with the thread you intend to sew
Choose the thread for the seam's function and appearance, then obtain the supplier's recommended needle range. Check that range against the machine's own limits. If there is no supported overlap, reconsider the thread or machine. A large eye fitted to an unsuitable needle system is not an acceptable workaround.
Thread labels are another source of confusion. Commercial numbers, Tex values, and ticket numbers should not be compared as if they were one scale. The thread must pass through the needle during sewing, not merely fit through a stationary eye. Watch for abrasion near the needle, fibers appearing along the stitch, or rough movement. These observations can justify a controlled size comparison, although a burr, incorrect threading, or damaged needle can produce similar symptoms.
Thickness changes the test, not just the number
Measure or reproduce the thickest actual seam rather than the unassembled panel. Include folded edges, reinforcements, linings, and junctions. Then consider firmness: two stacks of equal thickness may resist penetration differently. A soft folded panel and a dense vegetable-tanned strip should not automatically receive the same setup.
A bigger needle does not increase the machine's approved sewing capacity. If the project exceeds the machine's capabilities, changing needles can create larger holes without producing reliable feeding or stitch formation. Run a two-size comparison
Where both sizes are allowed, sew separate samples with your starting needle and one neighboring size. Keep thread, stitch length, material, and seam allowance unchanged. Label each strip immediately; it is surprisingly easy to forget which setup made which line once several scraps are on the bench.
Inspect the front and back before judging the appearance. Compare thread damage, hole size, stitch consistency, and the behavior of the seam when flexed. Keep the sample that works across the full construction, rather than choosing the prettier straight section while ignoring trouble at a folded end.
If neither sample performs properly, stop the size experiment and check other variables. Confirm the needle is new, seated correctly, and appropriate for the material. Check threading and feed. Repeatedly increasing size can conceal a different fault while progressively damaging your test leather.
Recognize an oversized result
Large visible openings around fine thread deserve attention even if the machine appears to sew easily. On a decorative edge, those holes may overwhelm the stitch. Closely spaced large cuts can also make the perforation line more pronounced. Do not try to disguise the problem simply by sewing another line over the first.
Consider whether the needle is too large for the thread, whether the point is unsuitable for the material, or whether the planned stitch spacing is too dense. Change one factor on fresh scrap. Recognize an undersized or unsuitable result
A needle that struggles through the assembly, deflects, or leaves frayed thread needs investigation. Stop before a damaged needle breaks. Check that the material is supported and fed without being pulled sideways. Review the machine's limits and the seam preparation, including bulky folds that could be redesigned or reduced.
Do not diagnose every skipped stitch as a size problem. Incorrect installation and material movement can interfere with stitch formation too. Use the skipped-stitch checklist before changing several settings at once. A fresh needle of the same specification is often a more informative comparison than a jump to a much larger size.
Keep a working specification
Once the seam is satisfactory, record the machine, system, point, size, thread product, and construction. Keep a physical sample with that record. When the hide, thread brand, or lining changes, repeat the test rather than treating the old note as a permanent recipe.
For purchasing, a clearly labeled small packet is often more useful than a broad assortment. The 90/14 and 100/16 household examples shown here illustrate adjacent buying options, not a guaranteed match to a particular leather thickness.
