Choose leather stitch length by comparing samples made from the real assembly. A dial number is a starting setting, not a verdict on appearance or strength. Thread thickness, needle point, edge distance, material behavior, and the shape of the seam all affect the result. The best sample should look appropriate, hold the layers together, and remain consistent through the difficult sections of the project.
This is why one universal setting is rarely useful. A small wallet pocket and a broad upholstery panel have different proportions. A sweeping straight seam and a tight rounded corner present different feeding demands. Instead of copying a number from an unrelated project, build a small reference strip that shows what your own machine produces.
Measure actual spacing
Sew a straight row on a representative scrap, then measure between several holes. Measuring across multiple intervals reduces the influence of one slightly misplaced stitch. If you measure from the first hole to the sixth, you are measuring five stitch intervals. Divide that distance by five to estimate the average spacing. Keep the units clear when writing the result beside the row.
Do not measure thread visible above the surface as though it were an exact hole-to-hole distance. Thread can slope or settle differently depending on the needle point and tension. Look at the puncture positions. Use the same measuring method for each sample so the comparisons remain meaningful even if the absolute readings are approximate.
Build three contrasting samples
Begin with a moderate setting within the machine's ordinary working range. Make a second row somewhat shorter and a third somewhat longer, leaving enough distance between rows that their holes do not interfere. Use the same needle, thread, and layers for all three. Label the setting before adjusting it again; memory is unreliable when several similar rows lie on the table.
View the samples from the distance at which the finished item will normally be seen. A close photograph can exaggerate differences that disappear on the actual bag. Then flex each sample and inspect the underside. Keep the row that balances proportion and seam behavior, not merely the one that appears most decorative in isolation.
Watch the material between the holes
Closely spaced punctures leave less unpierced leather along the seam. A very fine stitch is therefore not automatically a stronger stitch. Needle size and point influence the opening as well, so changing only spacing cannot correct an oversized hole. If the sample resembles a tear-off perforation, reconsider the combination rather than assuming more stitches are better.
At the other extreme, long spans of thread can look loose or catch on exposed surfaces. They can also make it harder to follow a small radius smoothly. Corners need advance planning
A corner that falls halfway between stitches can tempt you to add a tiny final stitch. That may leave an obvious crowded hole beside an otherwise regular line. Mark the corner and plan the approach on the sample. Minor placement adjustments made before reaching the turn are easier to control than an improvised last-second correction.
On a curve, the visual rhythm matters more than forcing every stitch into an imaginary straight-line measurement. Slow down and guide the work gradually. Diagnose shortened stitches before turning the dial
If spacing becomes shorter only at a folded intersection, the material may not be advancing as freely there. Increasing the setting for the whole seam may disguise that one symptom while making the flat sections too long. Compare the upper and lower layers for movement, check whether the foot is stable, and support the work so it is not dragging off the table.
A sudden change after fitting a new foot or thread deserves a fresh setup check. Look for a mechanical or threading explanation before assuming the leather needs a different visual style. Forward and reverse may look different
Try the securing stitches on the same sample as the main seam. Do not assume reverse will enter the previous holes perfectly. Small registration differences can create a cluster of punctures, especially when the seam is near an edge. Several extra passes are not a reliable substitute for choosing a suitable finishing method.
Check the model manual for how stitch-length and reverse controls interact. Some machines have model-specific adjustment procedures, and those should not be inferred from another machine's control layout. If the reverse result is unacceptable, investigate the setup or use a suitable alternative ending method. Keep the finished sample as the standard for the actual project.
Save settings with enough context
A note that says stitch length four is incomplete. Include the machine model, needle system and size, thread identity, number of layers, and measured spacing. Attach an offcut of the leather or write the supplier description. A future project may use the same dial setting yet look different because the thread or material has changed.
Check the reference again after maintenance, changing feet, or moving to a different batch of leather. You do not need to repeat an elaborate experiment every time, but a short confirmation seam can prevent a long visible mistake. Consistency comes from comparing results against a known sample, not from believing that one number suits every leather project.
