Seam construction determines where the bulk, exposed edges, and sewing access will end up. Choosing it early is more effective than buying a stronger machine after the pieces are already assembled. A flat overlap, a turned seam, and a folded edge can all join leather, but they place different demands on the material and the operator. The best choice follows the object's shape and intended use.
Start by drawing a cross-section of the proposed join. Mark the leather faces, lining, reinforcement, and stitch line. Then sketch the same area at a corner or strap attachment. This simple exercise often reveals a hidden extra fold that would otherwise appear only when the project reaches the machine.
Separate appearance from assembly
Decide which edges will remain visible and which will be enclosed. An exposed edge may need finishing after sewing, while a turned construction can hide an allowance inside the object. Neither approach is automatically better. The visible style, leather firmness, available tools, and ability to turn the assembled shape all affect the decision.
A seam can look attractive in a flat sample yet be impractical in the final object. Try folding the sample into the actual form. If a stiff seam resists bending at the corner, changing tension will not solve the geometry. Consider a different join or pattern shape before treating the difficulty as a machine problem.
Overlapping edges
An overlap places one piece over another and allows sewing from an accessible face. It can be convenient for flat panels or decorative attachments, but it creates a visible step and an exposed edge unless the design covers it. Determine the overlap width from the pattern and practical requirements rather than simply following the outside edge with the foot.
Mark registration points so the overlap stays even along its length. If the upper piece creeps, the finished width can vary even when the stitch line appears straight. Test any adhesive used to hold the assembly and keep its application consistent. Excess adhesive can complicate sewing and edge finishing without improving alignment.
Seams sewn face to face and turned
A turned seam can conceal raw edges, but the allowances still occupy space inside. Firm leather may create a pronounced ridge or resist turning through a small opening. Test the complete process, including the opening left for turning. An assembly that can be sewn flat is not necessarily one that can be turned without damage.
At curved sections, allowance shape becomes especially important. Do not cut close to the stitches simply to make a stubborn corner turn. Folded edges and hems
A folded edge can give a clean appearance while increasing the number of layers at the stitch line. Add another crossing seam and the stack may become much thicker than the main panel suggests. Make a folded sample using the same width and method planned for the project. Measure the junction rather than relying on the thickness of one leather layer.

Place pocket ends and reinforcement deliberately
Several pocket ends stacked at one location can produce a steep step. Where the design allows, arrange overlaps so they do not all terminate at exactly the same point. Keep the functional shape of the pocket intact; removing bulk should not leave an opening or an unsupported corner. Draw the revised layer order before cutting.
Reinforcement deserves the same attention. A strap attachment should be designed around how the item will be used, not only how it looks on a photograph. Avoid treating a decorative line of stitches as proof of load capacity. For demanding or safety-related uses, obtain appropriate construction guidance rather than relying on a generic craft seam.
Choose a sewing order that preserves access
Attach flat pockets and accessible trim before enclosing the main form when the design permits. Think through where the machine arm and foot will sit during each seam. A completed tube or box may obstruct a stitch line that was easy to reach ten minutes earlier. Paper mockups can expose these problems before leather is cut.

Evaluate a full junction
Make a sample that includes the normal seam and its thickest crossing point. Sew with the intended thread, needle, and stitch spacing. Check both faces, bend it into the finished position, and examine the exposed edges. If the layers move, note which layer advances and where the movement begins. That evidence is more useful than merely describing the machine as struggling.

A good construction is reproducible: its layers align, its bulk is intentional, and its seams remain accessible in the chosen order. Once those conditions are met, machine setup becomes a focused task instead of an attempt to rescue an avoidable design problem.
