A neat seam can still be spoiled by a trail of dents beside it. Before changing the machine, identify the mark: an impression from the upper foot, a scrape through the finish, a stain, or feed-dog impressions underneath. These are different problems. Photograph both sides under angled light and compare the mark with the shape of the parts that contact the leather.
The machine examples on this page illustrate feed arrangements for comparison. They are not replacement-foot recommendations or a promise of mark-free sewing; ask for a demonstration on your leather before considering a machine change.
Use an offcut from the same hide for diagnosis. A firmer sample from a different piece may conceal the issue, especially when the project uses soft or easily marked leather. Include the actual layers beneath the visible surface. Pressure distributed across a padded assembly can leave a different impression from the same setting on a single unsupported strip.
Distinguish compression from surface damage
A shallow dent that changes as the sample rests is not the same as a cut or scraped finish. Allow a sample to sit and inspect it again before deciding whether the mark is permanent. Do not assume that all dents will recover, however. The finished article needs to look acceptable under the conditions in which it will be used and viewed.
Scratches, sharp-edged lines, or damaged pigment warrant inspecting the contacting surfaces with the machine disconnected. Look for dirt, trapped particles, and obvious damage on accessible areas. Do not run fingers along a suspected sharp edge. A foot damaged in a needle strike may need replacement or professional attention rather than a higher pressure setting that presses the damage more consistently.
If the mark appears oily or discolored instead of indented, investigate contamination separately. Check the work surface and handling materials as well as the machine. Avoid applying a cleaner to the visible project as an experiment. Test any leather-care treatment on scrap and follow the leather or finish supplier's guidance; a sewing adjustment cannot reverse a chemical stain.
Reduce pressure only where the machine allows it
Consult the exact manual to determine whether presser pressure is user-adjustable and how it should be changed. Record the original position before testing. Make a small adjustment, sew a fresh sample, and evaluate both the mark and the feed. Removing the dent is not a successful repair if the layers now slide out of alignment.
The useful setting is the one that holds and feeds the intended seam reliably with acceptable marking. It is not necessarily the lowest possible pressure. If the seam contains a thick transition, include that in the test: a pressure setting that works on a straight, flat strip may fail at the junction. Do not confuse foot lift with pressure. Raising the foot to insert a thicker assembly does not establish that the machine can sew the stack, nor does it tell you what pressure will be applied during stitching. Consider the contact surface and foot shape
A compatible smoother or differently shaped foot may change how pressure is distributed, but compatibility includes more than whether it attaches. Clearance, movement, feed relationships, and the needle opening all matter. Ask the machine supplier which options are appropriate for the exact model. Do not assume that an accessory advertised for leather fits every leather-capable machine.

A wider contacting surface can be worth discussing, but it may reduce visibility or access on a narrow seam. Evaluate the entire operation, especially when sewing close to hardware or around a tight curve.
Avoid covering feed surfaces with improvised tape and assuming the problem is solved. Adhesive can transfer, coverings can move, and altered clearances may matter. Any protective interface should be compatible with the machine and tested through the full seam. If a method hides the needle line or requires pulling the material, it has introduced another problem that needs evaluation.
Check the underside independently
A smooth upper surface does not mean the underside is acceptable. Feed-dog impressions may matter on an unlined belt or exposed bag interior even if they would be concealed in another project. Inspect both faces before deciding a sample passes. Identify which side will remain visible in the finished construction and which marks are genuinely acceptable there.
Changing to smoother feed components can affect traction. That is a machine setup decision, not merely a cosmetic accessory purchase. Change the process when the surface demands it
Some finishes are much less forgiving than others. If the desired leather marks under every workable setting, consider a different construction, a different machine arrangement, or a supplier demonstration on that exact material. Positioning a seam where impressions are less visible may be legitimate design work, but it should be planned before cutting rather than used to excuse damage afterward.
Handling also matters. Avoid resting tools or clips on areas that must remain pristine, and support the project so it does not rub against the machine body during turning. Approve the sample before the project
Keep a finished sample long enough to assess any recovery or lasting finish change. View it under the lighting in which the product will be inspected, then compare feed consistency and seam strength requirements as well as appearance. Record the successful combination of leather, foot, permitted pressure setting, and construction. If no combination meets the finish requirement, stop and resolve that limitation before sewing the visible panels.
