The useful question when comparing Cobra machines is not which model has the biggest number. It is whether your daily work belongs in a lighter leather-goods setup or a heavy stitching setup, and what shape of bed lets you reach the seam. A wallet interior and a thick strap assembly may both be leather, but they ask different things of the needle, thread and feed system.
Leather Machine Company groups the Class 26 and Class 20 in its light-to-midrange family. It places the Class 3, Class 4 and King 4-25 in its heavy cylinder-arm family, with arm length separating those heavy models. That manufacturer grouping is a sensible starting point. It is not a substitute for sewing your thinnest and thickest actual constructions before ordering.
Why Class 26 versus Class 4 is a meaningful decision
The comparison often comes from a maker who wants bags now and heavier goods later. Buying for a possible future project can be expensive if it compromises the work that pays for the machine today. Write down what percentage of your planned output consists of soft bags, small accessories, stiff layered goods and unusually bulky intersections.
For the Class 26, start the conversation around medium leather-goods operations and access to shaped pieces. For a Class 4 demonstration, start with the heavy construction that motivates considering that class. Request the same small leather-goods sample on both. The resulting holes, stitch balance and handling will tell you more than the words industrial or heavy duty.

Separate throat reach from cylinder access
A longer working area to the right of the needle can accommodate more material. A cylinder bed creates space around and below the sewing area. These are different advantages. Someone sewing a broad panel may benefit from additional reach without needing a cylinder; someone closing a small pouch may need clearance below the seam while using very little throat space.
Place the actual project under the head during a demonstration and rotate it through the complete operation. Do not stop once the first few stitches are possible. A bag can begin comfortably and become trapped by its own bulk halfway around. A stiff piece can also contact the stand or guide before it reaches the end of the seam.
See cylinder-arm versus flatbed machines before deciding that an open bed automatically solves every shaped project. Sometimes changing assembly order is simpler than purchasing additional reach. Sometimes the shape genuinely requires the open space, and that should drive the shortlist.
Build a comparison sample that exposes problems
Use three samples with clear labels. The first should represent the thinnest item you expect to sell. The second should be a typical seam using your normal leather finish. The third should include an overlap, fold or reinforcement rather than only a uniformly thick stack. Mark the intended seam line and the desired distance from the edge.
Ask the operator to sew slowly enough that you can watch feeding at the transition. Then inspect both sides in good light. Look for changes in spacing, concentrated foot marks, knots sitting on the surface, and a tendency for one layer to finish ahead of another. Keep failed samples as well as good ones; the difference explains what changed.
A demonstration performed with a different thread size may be useful, but it answers a different question. Have the seller identify the needle system, point and size alongside the thread. Record the setup on the sample. That record is more helpful during your first week than a memory that the machine once sewed a thick piece neatly.
Accessories should solve named operations
An edge guide can help maintain a consistent offset on a straight strap. A different foot may improve clearance beside raised hardware. A support surface can help stabilize flat work. Before adding an accessory, name the seam it will improve and ask to see it installed on the exact model being purchased.
Do not assume similarly named feet or bobbins interchange throughout the Cobra range. Ask for model-specific part numbers, especially when buying used accessories. Compare dealers on the first month of ownership
Ask what remains to assemble and which initial adjustments the seller performs. Find out whether the sample supplied with the machine uses your thread and material or only the dealer's standard test strip. Clarify how delivery damage, missing items and setup questions are handled before moving a heavy crate into your workshop.
For a used machine, get the exact model identification and photograph the included equipment. Request a sewing demonstration rather than accepting that the motor runs. When choosing two ranges is more honest than choosing one
A maker producing thin interiors and heavy outer assemblies may eventually benefit from separate setups. That does not mean buying two machines immediately. It means being honest about which operation the first purchase will serve and which will remain hand sewn, redesigned or outsourced for now.
Choose the Cobra configuration whose normal work resembles yours. Keep an actual sample, a written package list and a support contact as the basis of the purchase. A satisfactory result across your everyday seams is a stronger reason to buy than the possibility of stitching an exceptional thickness once a year.
